Born in New Rochelle, New York on the 28th of April 1950 to Catherine, a homemaker who was born in Greenock, Scotland before moving to the United States at the age of 11, and Angelo, an insurance salesman born in New York to immigrants from Flumeri, Campania, Italy, James “Jay” Muir Leno is an American television host, comedian, writer, actor, and automotive historian who is famed for being NBC’s The Tonight Show and The Jay Leno Show also on NBC.
He was raised alongside his older brother, Patrick, a Vietnam War veteran who became an attorney before he passed on October 6, 2002.
Leno attended and graduated from Andover High School while growing up in Andover, Massachusetts before going to obtain a bachelor’s degree in speech therapy from Emerson College in Boston -the same place he started his comedy career in 1973.
Career
His career started in 1973 and it continued with minor roles in several television series and films, first in the 1976 episode “J.J. in Trouble” of Good Times, and the same year in the pilot of Holmes & Yo-Yo.
A Year later, Jay made his first appearance on The Tonight Show where he performed comically, and has never looked back.
His foray into films and television appearances continued with prominent roles in 1978 in American Hot Wax and Silver Bears. In that period, his other film and television appearances include Almost Heaven (1978), Going Nowhere (1979) on One Day at a Time, Americathon (1979), Polyester (1981), The Wild One (1981) on Alice, and both Feminine Mistake (1979) and Do the Carmine (1983) on Laverne & Shirley.
In 1986, Jay became a regular substitute for Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show until he became the substantive host in 1992 after the latter became embroiled in a controversy with David Letterman, who had been hosting Late Night with David Letterman since 1982, and whom many—including Carson himself—expected to be Carson’s successor.
Jay’s contract was extended in 1988 by NBC due to his sterling performances, and received public acclaim for his 1995 interview with Hugh Grant who had been arrested for receiving oral sex in a public place from a prostitute.
Forward to 2004, Jay’s contract was extended once more for a further five years and was replaced by Consn Christopher O’Brien at the expiration of his contract in 2009.
In the middle of signing a contract extension and expiration, Jay faced probably the biggest challenge of his career when he was accused of violating WGA guidelines by writing his own monologue for The Tonight Show during the 2007-08 Writers Guild of America strike, and answered questions in front of the Writers Guild of America, West trial committee in February 2009 and June 2009.

Personal Life
In 1980, Jay got married to Mavis and the union has produced no children till date. He suffers from word blindness and claims to need only four or five hours of sleep each night. He does not consume alcohol, smoke, or gamble and spends much of his free time visiting car collections and working in his private garage.
He is a man without no controversy and he claimed that he has not spent any of the money he earned from The Tonight Show, but lives off of his money from his stand-up routines.
On November 12, 2022, Jay suffered “serious burns” to his face and hands when a vehicle at his Los Angeles garage burst into flames, and as part of the treatment, he received a “new ear”.
On January 17, 2023, he sustained multiple broken bones after falling off a motorcycle.
He loves giving and in 2001, he and his wife donated $100,000 to the Feminist Majority Foundation‘s campaign to stop gender discrimination in Afghanistan, and to educate the public regarding the plight of women in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.
In 2009, he donated $100,000 to a scholarship fund at Salem State College -now Salem State University– in honor of Lennie Sogoloff, who gave him his start at his jazz club, Lennie’s-on-the-Turnpike.
In August 2012, Leno auctioned his Fiat 500, which was sold to a buyer for $385,000 with all the proceeds going to a charity that helps wounded war veterans recover by providing them with temporary housing, and he currently sponsors two scholarships at McPherson College.
However, in 2014, Jay was decorated with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Emerson College, where he also delivered the commencement speech.
