Born in 1964 on the 9th day of July in Montreal, Canada, to Georgette and Terry O’Leary, a business couple, Kevin “must have hoped” to have a childhood that will be the envy of others but all was not plain sailing as his parents divorced at an early age due to his father’s alcoholism which ultimately resulted in untimely death.
His mother remarried George Kanawaty, a UN International Labour Organization economist, and that caused the family to move regularly due to his international assignments.
Kevin lived in Cambodia, Ethiopia, Cyprus & Tunisia before becoming a youth and some experiences in the countries pushed him to desire to become a photographer. It never materialized as he attended the University of Waterloo where he bagged a bachelors’ degree in environmental studies and psychology on the advice of his stepfather.

Currently, Kevin O’Leary is a successful businessman, investor, journalist, and television personality which is the result of a career that started during the second year of his MBA program in 1978 when he was selected for internship at Nabisco cat’s food brand as an assistant brand manager.
Not long after, Kevin left Nabisco and began a brief career as a television producer with two of his former MBA classmates, Scott Mackenzie and Dave Toms before co-founding Special Event Television (SET).
It didn’t take long for Kevin O’Leary to sell his shares in the company before starting SoftKey in Toronto in 1986 with John Freeman and Gary Babcock, and the company majored in publishing and distribution of CD-based personal computer software for Windows and Macintosh computers.
By 1993, Kevin and his company, Softkey had become a major player in the educational software market, acquiring rivals such as WordStar and Spinnaker Software In 1995, Softkey acquired The Learning Company (TLC) for $606 million, adopting its name, and moved its headquarters to Cambridge, Massachusetts.
In 1999, Mattel acquired Softkey for $4.2bn and that started a decline which led to the firing of O’Leary, and payment of $103m by Mattel to put an end to the lawsuit in the court.
Four Years later, Kevin O’Leary became a co-investor and Corporate Director at StorageNow Holdings, a Canadian company that develops climate-controlled storage facilities and is controlled by Reza Satchu and Asif Satchu before selling his shares in the company for a windfall profit of $4.5m in 2007.
Kevin’s other investments include O’Leary Funds, O’Leary Ventures, Cryptocurrencies, and ETF.
