In Manhattan, New York City on the 4th of April 1965, Robert Downey Jr was born to the family of Robert Downey Sr, an actor and filmmaker, and Elsie Ann, an actress.

He grew up alongside his older sister Allyson in Greenwich Village. He attended the Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Training Center in New York as a teenager before proceeding to Santa Monica High School.

In 1984, Robert dated actress Sarah Jessica Parker after meeting her on the set of the movie, Firstborn. The love story lasted for seven years before their separation because of his drug addiction.
